Opening Gala

On February 5, 2010 from 5-9 p.m., the San Francisco Brewer’s Guild will host the first-ever Opening Gala event for SF Beer Week. Seeking to inspire creativity and celebrate the art in brewing, the event will feature exclusive beers from 30 breweries in the Bay Area as well as local art within the walls of Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, food from the area’s top Slow Food Nation chefs, and local live performances.

The breweries of the San Francisco Brewer’s Guild also came together to create a collaborative beer that will be unveiled at the start of the Gala. Details of the beer will remain behind brewery walls until the event, but Cicerone and President of the Brewer’s Guild, Rich Higgins commented that the style is “as San Francisco as you can get, and a bit of an oxymoron in concept to provide a tasty treat for beer fanatics in the Bay Area.”

Also featured will be the first batch of a triple IPA from Speakeasy and other special, exclusive beers from 21st Amendment, Lagunitas, Magnolia, Gordon Biersch, Firestone Walker, Bear Republic, Thirsty Bear, Devil’s Canyon and many others.

Early Entrance to the event is $45 for regular entry, $55 for V.I.P. guests (for whom doors will open an hour earlier, at 4:00 p.m.). tickets are expected to sell out and are limited; prices increase $10 after Jan 31. The admission price includes entertainment, access to some of the nation’s top craft breweries, unlimited pours, and a commemorative 12 oz stemmed glass.

There will be an exclusive media hour before the start of the event, from 4-5 p.m. where VIP and media will be able to have first access to specialty beers from top breweries and the brewers themselves. For more information, visit www.sfbeerweek.org

But before we get distracted we wanted to take a moment to thank all of you for your support over the year(s).

This is a tough business.

Each one of the employees here has spent long hours and seemingly endless days working to produce a quality product and spread the word about it, but at the end of the day its you, our growing base of loyal customers that we have to thank for your support, feedback and evangelizing.

We are up against entities with more money, more legislative power and in some cases – shady practices. We stand by our commitment to be an ethically sound business and a good steward of our community.

In the coming year we will continue our promise to you to create award-winning beer and root beer, to support local organizations and businesses.

Even though this has been a tough year for a lot of people we have seen our sales numbers increase. Yes, in part that is due to the efforts of our team, but there is no mistaking that our brand is growing as people like you spread the word. For that we thank you.

By “we” I mean the 5 families that make up Devil’s Canyon Brewery. We are your neighbors. We are your customers. Our children go to school together. We are families just like yours – trying to make this crazy dream work.

There is a paragraph of text we put on the laminates we place in various bars and restaurants we are on tap at. I don’t know if you have had a chance to read it so let me share it with you now:

In the 1800’s, the United States had over 1,500 breweries.

By the time the 21st amendment was ratified, only half of the facilities had survived prohibition. Even worse, due to consolidation, by 1978 the number dropped to 42.

Imagine, only 42 breweries country-wide. Little diversity, few options, fizzy, yellow, watered-down pilsners reigned supreme.

Thankfully, people just like you have begun to rediscover real craft beer. Neighborhood locales are carrying more selections from their neighborhood breweries.

Local economies and local jobs are being directly benefited, and thanks to the growing appreciation for locally brewed beers – today there are over 1,400 breweries operating in the US.

That’s a powerful testament to the will of the people not to bow down and accept what is pushed on them by corporations and the media. We are still about 100 breweries shy of what we had in this country over 110 years ago – but every time you decide to support your local craft brewery you send a message, you vote with your dollars, you make an impact.

This posting has no sales pitch. This message is from the heart.

The Santa Beer Bus is loading up December 11th

If you are unfamiliar with the Santa Beer bus check out these photos.

The bus will be making 4 or 5 stops throughout the evening (some will have food available but we recommend a hearty lunch or dinner beforehand) and we have extended the bus from 4 to 5 hours so we can explore a few southern destinations.

We will meet up at the Brewery at 6pm and share a slice of pizza with your new best friends. Santa’s Bus O’Beer departs promptly at 6:30pm and returns at 11:30.

Cost is: $45 for Beer Club Members $55 for Non-Beer Club Members

No spots will be reserved without payment – please don’t call or email us asking to save you a spot. This is a VERY popular event and seats are limited.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties has been providing services to the community for 35 years. They are the single largest nonprofit provider of food to low-income households in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties and are the seventh largest food bank in the country. They provide food to an average of 176,000 individuals each month. Of those they serve, 67% are families with children and 12% are senior citizens.
