Crittertopia is an online webcomic by Greg Cooper that gets posted every Wednesday.

Greg and his fiance have been known to hang out at brewery events every now and then and are a really neat couple.

This morning we we were alerted to a familiar logo in Greg’s latest comic strip . . .

Thanks for the homage  – we are still trying to decipher the hidden message and metaphoric reference.

“I Am A Craft Brewer” is a collaborative video representing the camaraderie, character and integrity of the American Craft Brewing movement. Created by Greg Koch, CEO of the Stone Brewing Co. and Chris & Jared of Redtail Media…and more than 35 amazing craft brewers from all over the country.

The video was shown to a packed audience of 1700 craft brewers and industry members at the 2009 Craft Brewers Conference as an introduction to Greg’s Keynote Speech entitled “Be Remarkable: Collaboration Ethics Camaraderie Passion.” As is tradition for the CBC Keynote, a toast to the audience was offered.

This time, the beers offered for the toast were all collaboratively brewed craft beers including Isabella Proximus, Collaboration Not Litigation, AleSmith/Mikkeller/Stone Belgian Style Triple, Jolly Pumpkin/Nøgne-Ø/Stone Special Holiday Ale, and 2009 Symposium Ale “Audacity of Hops.”

Had a visit from the cast of a local TV show for KTVU called, “Malou Review.” It’s a Bay Area based show that does positive reviews of restaurants, wineries, small businesses etc.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties has been providing services to the community for 35 years. They are the single largest nonprofit provider of food to low-income households in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties and are the seventh largest food bank in the country. They provide food to an average of 176,000 individuals each month. Of those they serve, 67% are families with children and 12% are senior citizens.

Last year, they provided 34.6 million pounds of food to those in need through their network of 328 nonprofit agencies at 1,051 distribution sites. As a leader in the community, they go beyond food assistance and operate community nutrition programs and a multilingual toll free hotline where callers can learn how to access the food programs in their neighborhoods. They work with lawmakers to advocate for policy changes and strive to eliminate hunger and its root causes.

Second Harvest Food Bank is a certified member of Feeding America, (formerly known as America’s Second Harvest, a network of food banks and food distribution programs in the United States. This membership allows Second Harvest Food Bank to cooperate with other member food banks, to receive food from national corporate food donors, and to benefit from national publicity and mutual support.

Thanksgiving is over and you are getting ready for Beer Friday. . . Hey! Why not bone up on the latest in brewing technology while you mack on that turkey sammich!

Coming up November 28th on NPR Science Friday:

It’s beer that made Milwaukee famous — and in this hour, in a rebroadcast of a segment from our trip to from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Ira and guests raise a glass to the science of brewing beer. How do yeast, water, hops and grain combine to form a lager, pilsner, or ale?

The steps in the brewing process seem simple: malting (allowing the barley to partially germinate followed by a roasting process), mashing (heating the grain in water, to convert some of the starches into sugars), and fermentation (converting the sugars into alcohol). But the actual process is quite complicated, requiring tightly-controlled conditions supervised by a master brewer. You need the right temperatures, the right times, and the right ingredients to get that brew to turn out right.

We rounded up some of the region’s best brewmasters to talk about the science of brewing beer, and learn some tips for making your own home brewed treats. We’ll also find out how expert beer tasters judge a good brew. Teachers, find more information about using Science Friday as a classroom resource in the Kids’ Connection.
